19th Century Original Mexican Retablo on Tin "Refugio" In Frame for sale in El Paso, Texas

$250

Beautiful original 19th century retablo from Mexico "Nuestra Seora, de Refugio de Pecadores" (Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners).
Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium.
This retablo is in its original condition and has not been retouched or restored. Mary and the Christ Child have sweet expressions and are adorned with gold crowns in puffy white clouds. Her ciphers are initialed on the side of her cloak. The oil colors are still clear and vibrant with only minor paint fading on the top corners. The retablo is nicely displayed in a custom made frame with an interesting history of retablo art form on the back.
Dimensions: 14 inches length X 10 inches width (without frame)
21 inches length X 17 inches width (with frame)
